Last week, I attended the 2nd Supported Decision Making Coalition meeting, put on by Disability Rights Maine. Supported Decision Making means having the freedom of choice (that I talked about last week) to be able to ask for advice in making your own decisions, rather than someone else making decisions for you.
Supported Decision Making is something people with disabilities all over the world are very excited about because it has helped a lot of people have control over their own lives who otherwise would have had a guardian.
At last week’s meeting, Senators and Representatives from Maine (They are chosen by the people of Maine, to help make laws) were invited to learn more about Supported Decision Making. People who are under guardianship or used to be under guardianship shared their stories and we all learned a lot!
