The Voice of SUFU

Winter Newsletter 2006

LauraHow you can make your voice heard.

By Laura Antranigian

SUFU’s board recognizes the dreams of all self advocates and makes goals and objectives each year to help make the dreams a reality.

Goal Four says: SUFU will support self advocates voices to be heard through testifying, letter writing, calls, ‘seat at the table’ and personal stories on topics such as services, inclusion, guardianship, and policies.

Any self advocate can help SUFU meet one of its goals and objectives.

You can go to Augusta and talk to lawmakers about issues that are important to you, if you are unable to get there, write a letter to mail or send with someone who is going to speak and they can deliver it for you.

It is really easy to get in touch with your representative, they value your opinions.

You can call toll free and find out who your Senator or Representative is: 1-800-301-3178, tell the operator what town you live in and you will get information on who your Representative, or Senator is and how to contact them.

Everybody can write letters or talk to the town officials where they live. It is important to let people know who you are, and the things that you care about." "

Another way to advocate is to sit on boards and committees that deal with self advocacy issues.

Do you have a story about how you advocated for yourself or others, would you like to share it? Your story could be in the next newsletter!

Would you like to gain skills and tools to share personal stories, and possibly become a future board member? If so call the toll free SUFU line at 1-877-207-4077, and please leave your name and phone number, and say you have a story to share, or you would like more information about trainings and workshops.
