Northern Speaking Up For Us Conference
By Deb Wiggins
We had a conference in Presque Isle on October 18th. The theme was ‘Let Me In’, about community inclusion and friends. We invited everyone!
Kile Pelletier, a self advocate from Eagle Lake was the Master of Ceremonies. Alan Deeves, Executive Director of the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, spoke on community inclusion. For the past 14 years Allen has been involved with assisting individuals with developmental disabilities and has enjoyed the many friendships along the way.
Everyone chose the workshops they wanted to go to. I co-presented a workshop on "When You Get A Job", tips to help you get and keep a job in the community.
There were other workshops on:
PCP, It’s All About You, about the PCP process, how it works and what you can do if it isn’t working for you;
Healthy, Happy and Well, tips for living healthy and happy;
Community Mediation Services, Mediators help people who are having a disagreement to discuss, negotiate and explore options for settling the conflict;
Kelly’s Rules, about rights and being treated with dignity and respect by staff; and
Saying It My Way Workshops!, workshops to say it your way and to have fun doing it.
We gave out the Marcia Rosen awards for self advocacy in Regions One and Two, and introduced the new board members.
The conference ended with a Halloween themed dance where people could wear costumes.
