A Job Well Done!

Here are two places in Maine that have done a good job of providing access for people with disabilities, especially those using wheel chairs: Wheelchair accessible symbol

Amtrak trainAmtrak train

This is taken from an article by Margaret Forbes, self advocate, and self advocacy coordinator:
In Maine we have been successful in receiving the Downeaster Amtrak train. This train has opened the world “Touch Free” for people with disabilities. Independence is celebrated by wheeling ourselves freely throughout the train without ever anyone touching you. Access to the snack bar, actual privacy to use the restroom, and even choice to independently using a train seat or your own chair on the train!!! This is a good life.

TentWinslow Park, So. Freeport Maine

Laura Antranigian reports that Winslow Park, a town owned day use and camping facility in South Freeport is 95% accessible for people with a wheelchair. All restrooms, campsites, and walking trails are fully accessible, the grounds were neat and clean, and fellow campers were friendly.

Wheelchair climbing a steep rampThe beach area proved to be the only area difficult to access; it has a very steep ramp, and lacks a beach chair to go across the sand.

The park has a day use area with a children’s playground ,volleyball net, picnic tables overlooking the ocean, grills, and a beach, you can swim and use the boat ramp withy the exception of low tide.. A hiking trail goes through the woods, along the ocean. The camping area has 100 sites both in the woods and overlooking the ocean.
