My name is Debbie and I’m your hostess.
By Debra Wiggins
My name is Debbie. I am a hostess at a local fast food place. I like my job. I get to help the customers. I show people where the soda machine and napkins are located and stuff like that. I clean up messes. Sometimes little children can be very messy, but I like kids so it’s okay. I try to be friendly with the customers but not get too occupied to do my work. I say things like hi, bye and have a nice day. I use to work in a sheltered workshop. Burger King is my first community job.
I’ve learned a lot! I have to do personal things and conversations on my own time not work time. Some places have dress codes. That means you have to dress properly. Some places tell you things like don’t leave your shirt tail hanging out because it looks sloppy. Some places you have to wear a uniform. You have to keep track of a schedule and always be on time!
In the future I would like to move on to something else besides hosting. I’d like to do more with the food preparation. I would like to learn about setting up a salad bar, waiting on customers and using the cash register. I still have more to learn but I’m getting there. It’s a long ways from the sheltered workshop.
It’s not just the work and the paycheck, there’s more to it. I’ve made new friends. Some co-workers are my friends. I went to the company Christmas Party. I really enjoyed it. I had fun. I like working in the community.
